TEACHING EXPERIENCE
California College of the Arts April/May 2008
Guest Instructor
I was invited to facilitate the final critique and grading of the college’s Color Workshop class. The professor and I engaged students in discussions about their artistic process, thematic content, color content, new ideas, and challenges pertaining to their final assignment: a vehicle for learning about color on an individual basis and developing “color” in their own voice. After viewing their work, I offered critique and feedback aimed at expanding their artistic voice, often referring them to other contemporary artists who might inspire new growth in their art.
Michigan School of art and design /Roman J.Witt Visitor Program Steptember/2008
Guest Lecturer
As an interdisciplinary artist who incorporates performance, time based mediums, and the act of painting into my artistic practice, my perspective was requested as a presenter to the school’s undergraduate seniors. I discussed how the interweaving of interdisciplinary art forms has proven to me that painting is more than an object to hang on a wall: painting itself is a living, evolving entity. To follow-up on my lecture, I visited the seniors’ studios and discussed their processes and goals, offering mentoring and guidance to them in their efforts to become surviving artists.
Holderness School: Visiting Artist March 2007/ March 2008
Created a comprehensive two-week art curriculum and facilitated to thirty high school students at Holderness. Themes of the curriculum included pushing boundaries, self-discovery, identity, and creative expression. Students worked through a five-piece self-portrait, worked on a collaborative painting, and created a video piece documenting their process.
Goddard College: Workshop Leader Fall 2007
Led a workshop about creating bodies of work in collaboration with other artists in the context of a non-resident graduate program. Facilitated discussion among twenty artists about the importance of thematic collaboration, while also exploring the obstacles to working in partnership in a non-residency setting.
San Jose State University: Guest Lecturer Fall 2006
In The Sociology of Violence, used a multi-modal approach to educate undergraduate students about the ways in which artists utilize creative expression to combat and cope with violence. Presented a powerpoint show to expose non-artists to artistic work, offered a lecture about artists’ processes, and concluded with a hands-on art therapy workshop.
Private Art Teacher 2002/2008
Developed individual lesson plans to help eight unique artists grow in their skill sets and their approach to their own artistic processes, allowing each artist to grow in their own time frames. |
